Safety While Traveling: Tips for 2026

In the past few months, I’ve been asked the same question over and over again: “With everything going on in the world right now… how can you feel safe traveling in 2026?”

It’s a fair question. Headlines are louder than ever, and recent events—like the escalating conflict in the Middle East have only added to that sense of uncertainty.

But here’s the truth most experienced travelers already know: the world has always had its tensions, its risks, and its moments of instability. And yet, millions of people safely explore it every single day.

This post isn’t about pretending risks don’t exist—everywhere, including near your home. It’s about understanding the risks, preparing for them, and learning how to travel with confidence instead of fear. Because when you know what actually makes travel safe (and what doesn’t), the world opens back up in a way the headlines rarely show.

Embarking on a new adventure is one of life’s great thrills, but nothing puts a damper on a trip faster than a preventable mishap. Thinking about safety isn't about being paranoid; it's about being prepared so you can relax and truly enjoy your destination.

These tips will help you stay secure, healthy, and happy, whether you're planning a road trip across the state or a backpacking journey across continents.

Core Safety for Every Trip

These fundamental practices apply no matter where your travels take you. Think of them as your travel safety foundation—strong, reliable, and universally applicable.

Protect Your Belongings

Keeping your stuff safe starts with a few simple, low-cost investments.

Invest in Anti-Theft Gear

You don't need a high-tech fortress. A simple money belt or a slash-proof backpack, often available for under $30, can be a game-changer. These keep your most important items like a passport, cash, cards out of sight and out of reach.

Never Leave Bags Unattended

This one sounds obvious, but it's easy to get distracted. In a cafe, loop a strap around your leg or the chair. In a train station, keep your bag in front of you. A moment's lapse is all a thief needs.

Stay Aware to Avoid Theft

Pickpockets and petty thieves are masters of distraction and thrive in crowded places. Your best defense is awareness.

Mind the Crowds

Tourist hotspots, bustling markets, and busy public transit are prime locations for theft. In these areas, move your wallet to a front pocket, zip up your purse, and hold it securely.

Don't Flash Your Valuables

Walking around with your expensive smartphone out or counting a wad of cash makes you an easy target. Be discreet. Some seasoned travelers even carry a "decoy wallet" with a small amount of cash and expired cards to hand over in a worst-case scenario.

Share Your Plans

Before you leave, share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member back home. Enable location tracking on your phone (like Find My on iPhone or Find My Device on Android) so someone knows your general whereabouts.

Health and Transportation

Getting from point A to point B safely and being prepared for health issues are key to a smooth trip.

Travel Insurance

This is one area where you should not skimp. An unexpected medical issue can be financially devastating. Affordable and comprehensive plans are available from companies like Global Rescue offer basic travel insurance and evacuation insurance for additional peace of mind.

Stick to Official Transport

Use reputable rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft where available. When taking a taxi, use official, marked vehicles from designated taxi stands. Avoid unmarked cars offering cheap rides. Whenever you get in a car, share your live location via an app like WhatsApp with someone you trust.

Know Emergency Numbers

Program local emergency numbers into your phone. While 911 is standard in the US, much of Europe uses 112, and other countries have their own numbers.

International Travel: Extra Layers of Safety

Crossing borders introduces new variables. A bit of focused research and cultural awareness can make all the difference.

Pre-Trip Research is Your Best Friend

Knowledge is your most powerful safety tool when traveling abroad.

Check Official Advisories

Before booking and right before you depart, check your government's travel advisories. The U.S. State Department's website (travel.state.gov) provides real-time information on safety risks, political unrest, health issues, and entry requirements for every country.

Understand Local Scams

Every tourist destination has its common scams, from the "found" ring to fake tour guides or petition-signers who are actually pickpockets. A quick search for “tourist scams in [your destination]” will prepare you to recognize and politely walk away from these situations.

Secure Your Documents

Your passport is your most valuable possession abroad. Treat it that way.

Make Several Copies

Keep physical and digital copies of your passport, visas, and any other important documents. Store the physical copies separately from the originals (e.g., in your locked hotel safe). Save digital copies in a secure cloud service or your email.

Protect the Original

Use a secure passport holder. When you’re out and about, consider leaving your physical passport in a secure location at your accommodation and carrying a copy instead, unless local law requires you to have it on you.

Cultural Awareness and Health

Blending in and respecting local customs not only enriches your experience but also enhances your safety.

Learn a Few Phrases

Knowing how to say "hello," "thank you," and "excuse me" in the local language goes a long way. It shows respect and can help you navigate daily interactions more smoothly.

Dress Modestly

In many cultures, conservative dress is the norm. Research local customs and dress to blend in rather than stand out. This can help you avoid unwanted attention.

Health Precautions

Check for required or recommended vaccinations well in advance of your trip; the CDC's travelers' health site is an excellent resource. In areas with questionable water quality, stick to bottled or purified water and be cautious with raw fruits and vegetables.

Key Take Away

Travel safety is not about avoiding the world—it’s about understanding it. While headlines can make travel feel risky, most issues are preventable with awareness, preparation, and smart habits.

When you take simple precautions, you can explore confidently and focus on the experience instead of the fear.

  • Preparation and awareness are your strongest safety tools

  • Most travel risks are avoidable with simple habits

  • Protect your belongings, money, and personal info

  • Do basic research on destinations, scams, and local customs

  • Travel insurance and smart transportation choices add critical protection

Go enjoy the world!
