Some destinations are beautiful. Others feel like they belong in a storybook. Our Zurich to Interlaken road trip through Switzerland was firmly in the second category. From watching colorful paragliders drift across alpine skies to tackling one of the most exciting adventure activities we've ever tried, this adventure weekend in Interlaken, Switzerland delivered unforgettable memories from start to finish.
Rachel and I flew into Zurich, picked up a rental car, and headed toward the mountains. The plan was simple: spend a few days exploring one of the most beautiful regions in Europe, experience canyoning in Interlaken, enjoy incredible mountain views, and finish with a visit to Zurich before flying home.
Zurich to Interlaken Road Trip Through Switzerland's Storybook Landscapes
The drive from Zurich to Interlaken immediately reminded us why Switzerland consistently ranks among the world's most beautiful countries. Well maintained roads wound through green valleys, small villages, and mountain scenery that looked almost too perfect to be real.
As we approached Interlaken, the landscape became even more dramatic. Snow-capped peaks rose in the distance while crystal-clear lakes reflected the surrounding mountains. Every turn seemed to reveal another postcard-worthy view.
Travel Tip: Getting to Interlaken
If you're staying in Interlaken itself, consider taking the train from Zurich instead of renting a car. Switzerland's rail system is clean, efficient, and offers spectacular views along the way.
If your plans include exploring the surrounding villages or staying outside of town, a rental car provides more flexibility. One thing we appreciated was the convenient parking available near the Interlaken train station. We found it easy to park, leave the car for the day, and enjoy a short walk to the town center, restaurants, shops, and adventure activity meeting points. It gave us the freedom of having a car without the hassle of driving through busy tourist areas.
Best Things to Do in Interlaken Switzerland: Simply Walk Around

Interlaken may be one of the easiest places in the world to enjoy without a detailed itinerary.
One of our favorite activities was simply walking through town and watching the endless stream of paragliders descending from the surrounding mountains. Their brightly colored canopies floated silently overhead before landing in the large open field near the center of town.
The setting was almost surreal. Green meadows, towering mountains, and dozens of paragliders drifting through the air made Interlaken feel more like a movie set than a real place.
It quickly became obvious why so many travelers consider this one of the best things to do in Interlaken, Switzerland.
Canyoning in Interlaken for Beginners: The Most Fun We Had All Trip

While the scenery was incredible, the highlight of our visit was unquestionably our canyoning adventure.
For those unfamiliar with the activity, canyoning involves making your way through a mountain canyon using a combination of hiking, swimming, jumping, rappelling, and swinging. Rather than following a traditional trail, the canyon itself becomes your route.
After gearing up and receiving instructions from our guides, we climbed to the top of the canyon and began working our way downstream.
The experience included jumping into pools of crystal-clear water, sliding down smooth rock formations, a wild rope swing, and navigating waterfalls. Every section presented a new challenge and a new opportunity to laugh.
Rachel became the unofficial star of the group when she launched herself from one of the rock jumps using what can only be described as a "Superman with peace signs" dive. Arms extended forward, fingers flashing peace signs, she flew through the air with complete confidence before twisting to splash into the pool below.
The entire group erupted in laughter, and it quickly became one of those travel moments we'll never forget.
If you're considering canyoning in Interlaken for beginners, don't let the name intimidate you. Professional guides provide excellent instruction, and the experience is designed to be exciting without requiring advanced skills. WHO DID WE USE???
Funicular Ride in Interlaken Switzerland for Lunch with a View

After our adrenaline-filled canyoning adventure, we slowed things down with a mountain excursion.
We boarded a funicular ride in Interlaken, Switzerland, climbing high above the valley for panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and lakes.
At the top, we enjoyed lunch while taking in one of the most spectacular views of the trip. Looking down across the valley, with lakes stretching into the distance and mountains surrounding us in every direction, it was easy to understand why travelers fall in love with Switzerland.
The combination of fresh mountain air, excellent food, and unforgettable scenery created the perfect contrast to the previous day's adventure.
Exploring Zurich Old Town Before Heading Home
Eventually it was time to leave the mountains and return to Zurich.
Rather than rushing to the airport, we spent our final day exploring Zurich Old Town, wandering through narrow streets lined with historic buildings, shops, and inviting cafes.
The atmosphere was completely different from Interlaken but equally enjoyable. We spent the afternoon strolling through the city, stopping for coffee, browsing local stores, and enjoying one final Swiss dinner before our trip came to an end.
The blend of medieval architecture and modern Swiss efficiency made Zurich an excellent place to finish our journey.
Why Interlaken Belongs on Every Switzerland Adventure Travel Itinerary

Looking back, our trip delivered everything we could have hoped for. We experienced breathtaking mountain scenery, enjoyed one of the most exciting outdoor adventures we've ever tried, explored charming Swiss cities, and created memories we'll be talking about for years.
From watching paragliders drift across the sky to Rachel's unforgettable Superman dive into a mountain canyon, every day brought something memorable.
If you're planning a Switzerland itinerary, make time for Interlaken. Whether you're seeking outdoor adventures, incredible scenery, or simply a place that feels like it belongs in a fairytale, you'll find it here.
For us, Switzerland wasn't just another destination—it was one of those rare places that somehow manages to exceed every expectation.
Just FYI - Taking the Train from Zurich to Interlaken
While our experience was driving to Interlaken so we could see more of the Swiss countryside, if you would rather skip the rental car, traveling by train from Zurich to Interlaken is easy. The trip typically takes about 2 to 2½ hours. Most routes require one or two changes, commonly in Bern or Lucerne, before continuing to Interlaken Ost or Interlaken West. Trains run frequently throughout the day, making this a practical option even if you are arriving at Zurich Airport. The route through Lucerne is particularly appealing if you want to make Lucerne part of your trip, while traveling through Bern is often the faster option. Once you reach Interlaken, the town itself is very walkable, and Switzerland's extensive train and bus network makes it possible to explore much of the surrounding region without a car.
